I’m a PhD candidate in UC Irvine’s program in Logic and Philosophy of Science (LPS). I use computational models to address questions in epistemology, philosophy of science, and social philosophy. I also have interests in the history and philosophy of the social and behavioral sciences.
My dissertation uses evolutionary game theory to study how successful methods of learning might emerge from more basic adaptive processes. I see this project as closely connected to canonical philosophical concerns about induction, in particular Hume's and Goodman's problems.
Another ongoing project studies the evolution of fairness-related attitudes in resource-division games.
My historical work has focused on Janina Hosiasson-Lindenbaum's underappreciated work on probability and induction and Alexander Bain's theory of learning.
Before coming to Irvine, I completed a B.A. in philosophy at Notre Dame.
I am advised by Jeff Barrett. You can reach me at ctorsell(at)uci(dot)edu.
